Dear BPCWAians, Over the last few weeks, we have looked at how best you can benefit from the messages every Sunday. I suggested several ways to aid your concentration, understanding and remembering of the sermon. I closed off expressing the hope that we will all be doers of the Word. After all, the church, as we know, is “the pillar and ground of the truth” that is supposed to help us to know “how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God” (1 Tim 3:15). And, that in the Great Commission, Christ required us to make disciples, “Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you” (Matt 28:20). So, realising that this is a key purpose
Read moreDear BPCWAians, Thus far, we’ve learnt that the receiving God’s Word through the sermon is a focal point of our Worship of God. Also, we saw that how we listen is also important. But what should follow after that? Accept it as from God. Do some soul-searching under the light of God’s Word. You may not have liked what you heard, but true listening is not about your feelings. As highlighted last week, you should have been listening to understand if what was preached was truly what God said. We must not miss the point that listening to the Word being preached is a salient part of worship because part of worship of God is to know Him and obey Him. We get these by listening to the Word preached. But, while we sit through the sermon, what do we do? Distractions. Teachers at school are probably familiar with the children that keep requesting to go to the toilet during lessons. A practice that many teachers (and parents) adopt is to get children to visit the toilet before
Read moreDear BPCWAians, Every week, after the reading of Scripture and praising God, we have the preaching of God’s Word on the pulpit during the sermon. What should our attitude and response be during this part of the Worship Service? A growing de-emphasis on Preaching. To some worshippers, preaching is just a small part of a train of activities in worship. The increasing focus on the various aspects of worship has shifted towards music. Churches boast about their music and musicians while de-emphasizing preaching. It is no surprise to see some churches tout that their attractive point is that they are focused on the music experience they provide. The growing trend is to increase the time spent on singing and dancing
